When Steven Soderbergh heard about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2, he understood the idea but was surprised that Quentin Tarantino approved it.
What did Steven Soderbergh say about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2?
In a recent interview with Business Insider, Soderbergh recognized that the friendship between David Fincher and Brad Pitt led them to make the sequel.
“No, because of Brad,” Soderbergh said when asked if he was shocked to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2 greenlit. “I think they’re always on the lookout for something to do together, and so this was, it sounds like, an unusual set of circumstances where Quentin decided he didn’t want to do it, and Brad asked him, ‘Can I show it to David?’ and he said sure, and David read it and said, “Let’s do it.’ That seems to be what happened. That’s not surprising at all.”
What Soderbergh can’t grasp is why Tarantino allowed it to happen.
“What’s surprising is Quentin’s agreeability,” Soderbergh added.
Because of Soderbergh’s friendship with Fincher, he knew the idea for a Cliff Booth-focused movie had been circulating. Soderbergh believes the sequel will move rather quickly into production.
“I was aware, but I was also very cognizant that this was a newsworthy piece of information,” Soderbergh said. “Actually, I was surprised it took that long for the story to come out. But it’s happening, and it’s happening soon.”
Fincher will direct the Cliff Booth movie for Netflix, with Pitt reprising his Oscar-winning role. Tarantino penned the screenplay and allowed Pitt to recruit Fincher to direct.
The movie will likely not be a direct sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The follow-up is more about Booth’s adventures as he navigates Los Angeles in 1977, roughly eight years after Tarantino’s film.
Netflix has not announced a release date for the Fincher-Pitt project. Filming is expected to begin this summer.
