How to Improve Your Focus and Get More Done Every Day

-

im sitting in my apartment in the US right now its like 9 degrees outside or something stupid, heater is making this low humming noise that’s somehow both annoying and comforting, my coffee from this morning is cold and has that gross film on top but im still sipping it because whatever. and im trying—again—to improve my focus so i dont waste another whole day like i did tuesday.

tuesday was bad. real bad. planned to finish this post + answer like 18 emails. ended up watching asmr videos of people organizing spice racks for 2 hours straight. didn’t even like them. just kept clicking next. brain on autopilot. zero output. felt like garbage after.

so yeah… still figuring out how to improve your focus in 2026 when everything is fighting for your eyeballs. here’s what kinda-sorta worked for me (and what definitely didn’t). no guru vibes. just one flawed dude in sweatpants sharing what stopped the complete mental freefall.

The Brain Is a Toddler on Red Bull – Accept It

first thing that helped was admitting my attention span is shot. not “a little distracted”. clinically online. i saw some stat recently saying average focused work time before first distraction is under 50 seconds now. i believe it. i counted once. 38 seconds from opening google doc to checking X. pathetic.

once i stopped pretending i have monk-level discipline, i could actually build systems around my broken brain instead of fighting it.

Stuff That Sorta Works (When I Remember to Do It)

1. the ugly one-tab-at-a-time thing

i used to have 60–100 tabs like it was a personality trait. chrome would crash. computer would sound like a jet engine. finally i made a rule: one real task = max 3 tabs. everything else gets thrown into a “squirrel” doc titled “random crap to look at later”.

i still break it. right now i have like 11 tabs open writing this. but its better than 80. progress not perfection right?

2. focusmate but i call it awkward zoom babysitting

i pay $5 a month or whatever it is now to sit on video with strangers who are also trying not to screw around. we dont talk. we just work. its the weirdest most effective thing ive found.

last month i did 22 sessions. finished 19/22 things i said id do. normally without it id finish maybe 6. its like having a silent coworker judging you quietly across the table. works stupidly well.

Focusmate if you wanna try the awkwardness

3. phone literally in the microwave (not plugged in)

not even kidding. when i need 90 real minutes the phone goes inside the microwave. door closed. cant see the screen. cant hear it vibrate through the metal. feels extreme until you realize you were losing 2–3 hours a day to it.

i still cave sometimes. yesterday i “needed to check the score” and 47 min later im reading about bigfoot sightings in ohio. but most days the microwave trick saves me.

4. the two-minute scream onto paper

before i start anything hard i grab a piece of paper (or my notes app if im lazy) set timer 2 minutes and just word-vomit every thought.

“client invoice late again, forgot dentist appt, why is my neck clicking, should i buy new mattress, did i feed plant, twitter argument i shouldnt have started”

once its out my head stops looping it. feels dumb. works.

The Stuff I Keep Trying & Failing At

  • pomodoro – the 25 min timer stresses me out more than helps. i either ignore it or get mad when it dings
  • cold showers in morning for “focus energy” – lasted 9 days. hated every second. no noticeable difference except i was colder
  • no caffeine after 2pm – lol i wish. 4pm slump hits i reach for monster anyway

where im at right now jan 2026

honestly? still messy. still open too many tabs. still doomscroll sometimes. but im stringing together 4–5 decent hours most days instead of 45 min then crash.

its not sexy productivity porn. its just slightly less self-sabotage.

if youre also kinda drowning right now pick literally one thing from this mess. try it for like 4 days not 30. see if it moves the needle even 10%. thats all i got.
